How Hot is to Hot?

To set the stage. I now live in Southwest Oklahoma. In the past I lived 3 years in Paderborn and 2 years in Bad Hersfeld Germany and 2 years in Drama Greece. So I do know a little about Europe’s weather and the fact that home/business Air Conditioning is not common.

BBC News report, as if this is news worthy.
A temperature of 32.7C (91F) as recorded at Heathrow Airport, making it the sixth day in a row that the heat had exceeded 30 degrees.
It comes as figures published by NHS England show there has been a fivefold increase in the number of people seeking advice about heat exhaustion over the past week.
Meanwhile, an amber heat-health warning issued by the UK Health Security Agency is in effect for nearly every area of England until 21:00 on Sunday. The rise in temperatures has led to a 552% increase in people visiting the NHS website for heat exhaustion advice.

It amazes me to hear all the whining about the temp. and even worse some of these people actually die from heat related problems.

Yes I have an AC, it is set to turn on at 82/83 degrees F (27.8/28C).
My grand son is employed by the state department of transportation and this past week they have been laying asphalt over lay. The asphalt is 390F (198C) degrees cumming off the truck. The air temperature has been over 100F (37.7 – 43.3C) degrees this week.
Wow, guess what. No one died from the heat!

September temperatures recorded at the National Weather Service- Mesonet station 2 miles from my home are listed in the chart below.
Day Max Min Avg
1—-100–72–85.0
2—– 98–67–82.2
3—-104–68–85.7
4—-104–74–89.2
5—-106–75–89.3
6—– 96–74–83.4
7—-106–71–88.1
8—-110–73–89.9

I am truly perplexed how anyone can be dying form heat related causes when the temperatures reach into the low 90’s.

  1. I love in central Oklahoma. A friend of ours just retired from roofing commercial buildings. He never allowed air conditioning on at home because he didn’t want to become acclimated to it. He’s now retired and his wife is so happy to have air conditioning in the hot Oklahoma summer!

  2. This made me smile. As a Brit living not too far from Heathrow, I have a few insights to share. On this island we’ve not evolved to handle consistently hot, dry weather. Our homes, clothes and mindset are adapted for grey mizzles with the excitement of an occasional hot spell (usually never more than 3 consecutive days) followed by a jolly good downpour, because the garden needed it. Today the weather has obligingly returned to low 20s with a nice breeze and grey skies. Much more civilised:) I’m always shocked that anyone can die from heat or cold related causes in a civilised society but there are so many factors. Energy bills have quadrupled which makes turning on a fan an expensive luxury for many. Those dying aren’t the fit, young types like your grandson but those with existing health conditions made worse by the weather conditions and poverty.

  3. This year was just miserable.between the smoke form the Canadian fires, the pollen count and heat, I think in all my 6 decades it has never been worse. I had one day that when I went to get the mail it was so hot I felt like my skin was searing off my rack. The next day I had sun poisoning on my nose and it was just an awful year. The weeds in my garden, well, they thoroughly enjoyed it as they reached grand heights of over 10 tall some of them. And yet we have had hotter years, just this year was something of a different sort.

    • Of course we become acclimatized to the hot weather and we aren’t caught of guard as it is an every year event. Grin it’s the cold that does us in. When it goes 32 (0C) and lower we become almost paralyzed and house bound.

Yes, the weeds seem to thrive on hot and dry, my tomatoes, cucumbers and squash not so well.

      • I do not like a/c and this year was like living in a bubble. Now that fall has arrived, I think the season will be too short for my taste. Winter in Illinois can be nasty, yet we have not seen much snow in years. Last year we did not even do any plowing. I hate ice and these old bones talk more now in the changes.the older get. and dare I fall. Age just has a way of creeping up on one! I planted my cukes from seed late and now they are ok with the weather. The zukes did well. Now I am letting them get big for the chickens. The tomatoes did not suffer, nor did they do tremendous.maybe for a little while I will still get fruit.
