Purple Martins Scouts Checked Out My…

Purple Martin scout birds were seen checking out my house I set up last spring. However the Sparrows have been trying to move in and they are fighting the Martin scout birds away from the house.

In this area we have 3 or 4 different types of Sparrows, but the most aggressive is the common English house Sparrow.

The English house sparrow is native to most of Europe and the Mediterranean region. In North America it is considered a non-native invasive pest and is not protected under U.S. native song bird laws. It has been characterized as a pest, and poses a threat to native birds. It will eat almost any seeds, but where it has a choice, it prefers oats and wheat.
In my case they raid grain in chicken feeders and scratch placed on the ground to feed my flock of chickens.

I remove their nesting materials from my Martin house daily and given the opportunity I dispatch them with my pellet rifle. However this has not deterred them from continuing to attempt to nest in my Martin house.

In an effort to remove them form the area around the house I am building Sparrow traps. The first trap is nearly completed. It is constructed out of 1/2 X 1 inch welded wire and it is 18 inches wide, 21 inches long and 8 inches tall with 2 entry funnels. With luck I will have it in place and baited before noon today.
Total cost for constructing 2 traps will be around $20.00 or maybe $22.00 US dollars.
** Construction Note: Trap size was based on available wire size. Constructing 2 traps from one 30 X 120 inch roll of wire.

USA Wheat Production – Break Even Price / Bushels Per-Acre

Any consumer that holds onto the belief that farmers are getting rich feeding America should know that this is a myth.

The figures listed are for the 2015 wheat growing season.
There are two numbers that you should be carefully comparing.
The ‘Average’ bushels per-acre harvested and the number of bushels per-acre to reach the break even price.

* USDA Said “A December 2015 price range of $4.80-$5.20 /bu was forecast with a midpoint of $5.00 /bu, the lowest level since $4.87 /bu in 2009.

* USDA U.S. Wheat Forecast for 2016/17: Projected yields of 45.9 bu/acre. U.S. wheat prices are projected to be $4.40 /bu – down from $5.00 /bu in 2015/16.

Next time one of your friends whine about the cost of flour or bread, remind them flour and bread cost Is Not Caused By The American Farmer.
They should turn their anger and questions to Mega companies like General Mills, Proctor and Gamble, Gold Metal, Pillsbury, Target and Walmart stores.

11 AM And It’s Already 94 Degrees

So, summer finely arrived. May 30 the cool wet month ended for me, sun came out and temperatures that have been holding mostly in the high 70’s jumped to the mid / high 90’s. 10 days of dry weather and 95+ degree temperatures are beating up my tender summer squash and cucumber vines. Two have died and the others don’t look all that good either.

It’s not from a lack on moisture. It’s a simple fact my vines have not had time to acclimate to the higher temperatures.

Now my If Anyone Cares Report. Wheat crops are ready to be combined, however many fields are still to wet to support the weight of combines. Wet windy conditions in late May has caused a great deal of the wheat to fall. It is what farmers call lodging and make it difficult or impossible for the combine headers to get the lodged wheat off the ground.

What looked like a bumper crop 45 days ago now looks average or even in many fields below average yields. Yields and quality will quickly go south. Everyday of delayed harvest is dollars lost, taken out of struggling farmers pockets.

Drying and warm weather is helping the cattle producers get foot rot problems under control. Cattle that must stand in cool wet soils are in danger of developing this bacterial disease.

I’m off to the pond. Time for grand pa and great grand pa to spend some time entertaining grand / great grand sons.

Where Have All The Hummingbirds Gone?

About 10 days ago I made a batch of sugar water(1 cup sugar, 4 cups water) and hung my Hummingbird feeders. Before dark I had 2 pair of Ruby Throat Hummingbirds finding and feeding from my new feeders.

Then the next day I had the start of a few days of overcast, cooler weather. Hummingbirds must have gone back to Mexico, They because they are no longed feeding at my new feeders! However I do have 4 or 5 pair of Eurasian Doves coming twice a day to feed, a few Red Wing Black birds and a pair of Red birds.

It’s almost mid-week and the sun is shining, temperature is bumping 80 degrees, but the west wind is holding steady at 30 mph gusting to 35 or 40 mph. Not really a nice day to garden.

On the brighter side, many of the onion sets I planted in my patio pots are shooting bright green shoots skyward. A few Radish seeds and Beet seed have germinated and are showing the promise of making a fresh spring time salad. Fresh green onions, radish and beets. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Pear, Apple, Cherry, Peach and Apricot trees are in full bloom every where you look. Mesquite trees are setting bugs. Mesquite trees seldom get fooled and get hit with a late freeze. So, taking my lead from my old Mesquite tree. Today sweet corn will be planted. Early planted corn has a better chance of avoiding being attack by ear and root worms.

The wheat and cereal rye seed son-n-law drilled (8 acres) in late last fall is up and providing good grazing for our livestock. I had almost decided that we had not received enough rain for get a crop up. But I think that slow melting be had in late January did the trick.

I’m off like a shot in the dark. Corn seed in hand.

Wheat – Feeding The World – Gluten Is Not A Dirty 4 Letter Word

World wide, wheat is the leading source of vegetable protein in human food, having a higher protein content than other major cereals, corn or rice. In terms of total production tonnages used for food, it is currently second to rice as the main human food crop and ahead of corn, after allowing for corn’s more extensive use in animal feeds.

Six wheat classifications: 1) hard red winter, 2) hard red spring, 3) soft red winter, 4) durum (hard), 5) Hard white, 6) soft white wheat.[ The hard wheat’s have the most amount of gluten and are used for making bread, rolls and all purpose flour. The soft wheat’s are used for making flat bread, cakes, pastries, crackers, muffins, and biscuits.

100 g (3.5 oz) of hard red winter wheat contain about 12.6 g (0.44 oz) of protein, 1.5 g (0.053 oz) of total fat, 71 g (2.5 oz) of carbohydrate (by difference), 12.2 g (0.43 oz) of dietary fiber, and 3.2 mg (0.00011 oz) of iron (17% of the daily requirement).
The same weight of hard red spring wheat contains about 15.4 g (0.54 oz) of protein, 1.9 g (0.067 oz) of total fat, 68 g (2.4 oz) of carbohydrate (by difference), 12.2 g (0.43 oz) of dietary fiber, and 3.6 mg (0.00013 oz) of iron (20% of the daily requirement).
It should be noted that gluten constitutes about 80% of the protein contained in wheat. Removing gluten(gluten free products) also removes 80 percent of the protein your body needs.

Studies in Europe, South America, Australasia, and the USA suggest that approximately 0.5 to 1% of the population “may” have celiac disease. If you are not one of the less than 1% of the population to be diagnosed as being gluten intolerant. Get off the gluten free fad wagon!

Eat less highly processed white flours and more whole wheat and multi-grain products. Eat more rye and barley products.
If the first item on the bread ingredient list is not whole wheat(whole grain) select another brand / variety of bread.

Gluten is often present in beer and soy sauce, and can be used as a stabilizing agent in more unexpected food products, such as ice cream and ketchup. Protein content of pet foods may also be enhanced by adding gluten.
