When Do the Seasons Begin – year 2020

When Do the Seasons Begin?

Each season has both an astronomical start and a meteorological start. It sounds complicated, but it’s not!
The astronomical start date is based on the position of the Sun in relation to the Earth, while the meteorological start date is based on the 12-month calendar and the annual temperature cycle.

The First Days of the Seasons

Seasons of 2020 Astronomical Start Meteorological Start
SPRING Thursday, March 19 Sunday, March 1
SUMMER Saturday, June 20 Monday, June 1
FALL (Autumn) Tuesday, September 22 Tuesday, September 1
WINTER Monday, December 21 Tuesday, December 1

Of course these season dates do not apply to our friends living and gardening south of the equator.

  2. Nor do they necessarily apply to those of us living up in places like where I am near the 51st parallel. March 19th is when deep winter went to plain cold winter. We often have blizzards in what qualifies as spring. We can get frosts in summer, especially summer before the arrival of fall and winter is always back by November 15th no matter what the calendar says.
