It’s that time of the year again. Time for many of us to plant our starter seedling pots.
This is a DIY project that I posted about back in Feb. 2011 and it’s still a cheap and easy to make your own seedling starter seed pots. I haven’t found any thing easier or cheaper that works anyway better than this $3.00 project does.
I have seen these cute ‘expensive’ wood devices that can be used to make newspaper seedling starter pots. I have seen them listed on internet websites from about $25.00 to as much as $50.00. I just want pay that much for a dollar or two of wood.

I’m very jealous about that then. I live in northwest Ohio, which was formerly named “the great black swamp” before drainage ditches turned it all into farmland. It makes for great names for art festivals and breweries but can pose problems elsewhere. 🙂

Of course tax payers are the source of funding, but, 50 miles west of me is a fairly large area that was swamp. It was drained in the 1920s/1930s turned into ‘poor’ quality farm, it did flood ever 3 or 4 years wiping out crops.
The federal and state government purchased most of this area and have filled n drainage ditches. It is once again home to a wide variety of plants, animals and water loving birds.

I’ve tried this and unfortunately when I did it I had problems with molds on the paper. I have the same problem with those peat pots too. Using a diluted peroxide mix helped greatly for me with the mold problem and is supposedly good for the seedlings too. Now it’s all I use in seed starting! I recommend it for those that try the newspaper pots.

I have never had that problem, but the air in Southwest Oklahoma is very dry and mold or fungus of any kind is seldom a problem.

Looks good! We have chickens so, I tend to use a few cardboard egg cartons. I end up pulling each “egg holder” apart and planting them directly into the ground. Our cartons cost less than $1 so I hope that’s not a terrible price!

I have also used paper/fiber cartons. Sad grin… but I sometimes miss a day watering and often killed my seedlings.

Love this idea! I usually pull off the foil tips and pull out the filters of my used K-cups to start my seedlings since it already has a hole in the bottom after use and I write what seed it is on the outside with a sharpie. That said, I found that if I am unable to transfer to the ground quickly, then the k-cup is too small, so I’m going to try your idea : )

I don’t start many seedlings. My growing season, most years, is close to 220 day so I plant most things directly in the ground or the pot that it will be growing in.
