This is my first snow and most likely my last 2014 snow . In my little part of Southwest Oklahoma our Winter Weather usually arrives very near the new year.
Chickens are refusing to leave the hen house. A mob of black birds, brown headed cow birds, a few English sparrows and 4 pair of Eurasian doves are making large amounts of hen scratch (sorghum and crushed corn) disappear. Cows, horse and donkey are in the barn and refuse to come out into the snow.

Still waiting for our first snow here in Tennessee. Had a few flurries last month, but no accumulation. Where we live it seems to be hit or miss. We can drive a mile up the road, cross the bridge and run into rain or snow, while our house has nothing! Still trying to figure that one out!

The English (house) sparrow is found in most parts of the world. This sparrow is native to most of Europe, the Mediterranean region, and much of Asia. Its intentional or accidental introductions to many regions, including North America, Australia, Africa,
Eight pair were brought to the U.S. in 1850. The English House Sparrow was imported to North America to protect trees from a caterpiller which is the larva of the Geometrid Moth.
One hundred more which were released in 1852 and 1853. In 1854 Colonel Rhodes imported and released some of the birds in Portland Maine and some in Quebec.
In 1869, about one thousand were released in Philadelphia. They were released in San Francisco, Cleveland, Cincinnati, St. Louis and several other cities in the interior. Between 1874 and 1876 a few were released in Jackson and Owosso, Michigan and in 1881 they were introduced in Iowa.

Got a similar photo this morning from family in eastern Oklahoma, but not quite that much snow. Lots of rain down here, but now snow. Don’t want any either!

We had our first snow last night at dinner time by bed time it had gone, we live on a penisula in the uk, and thankfully we are very lucky when it comes to cold weather

I saw on BBC News this morning that much of the UK was having snow and ice storms. I’m glad that you were spared the worst of it.

It’s sad but we have the same problem. Not enough snow on the ground each year for drivers to learn how to drive on snow / ice covered roads.

Frosty morning this morning the gritters have been out last night and have put the smallest amount of salt down, local council cutting costs which is something else that does not help, last time we had heavy snow I left the car at home and walked it was safer, was not worried about my driving abilities lol it was everyone else I was worried about

I don’t know who is right on this but some 3 years ago my county(Comanche county) banned the use of salt on our roads. Now the roads are coated with sand, No salt added. Highway maintenance people claimed salt was damaging bridges and over-passes.
For what it’s worth I can’t really tell much difference in roads that are only sanded and the ones other places that use sand and a salt mix.

Loved your post… Who said chickens always get confused, while deciding to cross the road? 🙂 I don’t blame your farm animals for refusing to venture out. I live in Northern Canada and if I could I would refuse too, until Spring.. How does that song go?? Baby it’s Cold Outside…

To tell you the truth I can’t understand it either.. I was born in the warmer climates of California. But lived in the Good Old Southern states, until mid twenties. So, I think it’s perhaps the lack of earthquakes, hurricanes, tornado’s and of course the humidity of the south. But, the Winters are long, and indeed cold. Thanking you kindly, for your response… 🙂

Snow reflects the stars and moon light. It makes a huge difference during this dark time of the year in Sweden. We have had a drop in temperature We hit lows of -15 Celsius (-5 F), during the warmest part of the day. We have just a few inches of snow.

Actually this has been a warm Christmas. When it is minus 25 -30 Celsis and then you count the wind chill factor on top of that. That is a cold winter.
