What’s On Your Table? – Don’t Forget The Great American Backyard Camp-out

stars-by-night My grand son brought home a nice mess of turnip greens with a few small turnips attached. They will be the main dish for Tuesdays lunch meal.

This site has more information about Turnips and Turnip Greens than most of us care to know.
The good news is Turnip greens are a very healthy food having only about 30 Calories in a 1 cup serving.
Packed with vitamin A, B vitamins as well as vitamins C and K. Containing many trace elements needed for good health.

Best of all Turnip greens taste great and go well with almost any meal or can be used fresh, raw in salads.

Michelle L. (my daughter) has suffered a big setback in her tiny kitchen garden. 😦 Her guard donkey, Yes country folk do have such things as guard donkeys, found his way into her garden plot and did what donkey’s do…. He eat two Japanese maple trees, her peppers, tomato’s, corn, cucumbers, squash and most of her herb garden as well. I think Michelle L. Will replant this coming weekend.

Something New! Well new to me. Great American Backyard Campout on Saturday June 28. A good time to get you and your children out of the house and a time to go electronic gadget free for at least one night. Turn off all those gadgets, the phones, TV’s, radio’s, go one night without IM”s, Texting, phone calls or emails.

Seek out an area that is … well … as free of light and noise pollution as you can find. Invest in the makings for hotdogs (served cold or hot) and (roasted) marshmallows. Don’t forget to bring 100 percent all fruit juices. Sliced raw fresh fruit and vegetables for snacks. Potato or other chips is not a good choice for snacking.
Watch the sun set, stay up late star gazing, get up early and see the morning sun rise. Watch and listen for the sights and sounds of the birds and animals of the night. Find and point out the big and small dipper, north star, Venus and such to your kids. Be prepared to defend your camp sight from Lions, Tiger and Bears!!! 🙂
If you have a camp fire, keep it well contained, small, extinguish using a lot of water before going to sleep for the night.

  1. Quick question… We love doing that sort of thing. Staying out with a bonfire and watching stars, but I find we usually get driven inside because of huge bugs. Do you have a solution for keeping the bugs at bay while you enjoy the great American camp out?

In general insects of all kinds are attracted to white light. Porch, security, and camp lights attract many unwanted guest(Bugs). Use this type lighting only when really needed. Keep fruits on ice, (insects don’t like being cold) covered and away from the area you will be setting or sleeping in.
Keep grass a other vegetation cut(mowed) short and dry for a day or two before your camp out.Ticks, fleas, chiggers, wasp don’t like dry short grass areas.
Don’t smell or look like a flower! Avoid floral smelling soaps, perfumes that make you smell like a flower when going outdoors, day or night. Wear light colored clothing covering as much of your body as you can. Insects can’t bite/sting what they can’t get to.
Don’t breed mosquito’s! Mosquito’s travel only a short distance from the place they hatched. Look for and eliminate ‘Any’ standing water near your outdoor camp / recreation area..
Empty and refill bird baths every other day.
FYI: Mosquito’s are not attracted to light’s, they find your because your still breathing and you exhale carbon dioxide. This gas is what attracts and allows mosquito’s to find you on the darkest night.
Do use insect repellents containing DEET. Citronella products are ‘some what’ useful as well.
I hope you find some of this information useful.
      Happy Star Gazing

  2. Oh no! I’m sorry for your daughter! I know how that feels. I’ve had deer do that to my garden.
