Dr. William Davis on CBSnews is doing nothing more than hyping propaganda for his new book.
Davis can not or at least does not site a single scientific fact proven research paper to support his fear mongering book claiming wheat is bad for your health. Davis is totally incorrect in making claims wheat to be an 18-inch tall plant created by genetic research in the ’60s and ’70s. The truth is the first GM wheat was field tested in 1992. And as of this date GM/GMO wheat is not commercially grown in any country on earth.
At least for the present time, Monsanto decided to no longer offer Roundup-Ready Wheat commercially until transgenic wheat is more widely accepted. Currently no transgenic wheat is used commercially in the United States. Don’t relax to much or count Monsanto down and out. Monsanto to appeal to consumers, transgenic techniques have attempted to increase the gluten content for use in baked goods and to reduce wheat’s allergenic effect among those suffering from celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Transgenic methods have also been used to promote wheat’s purported health benefits by enhancing wheat’s lignans which may have anti-cancer properties.
To appeal to environmentalists, Monsanto’s transgenic techniques have been touted as having more precision in the way genes are selected, as opposed to mutagenic techniques using radiation or chemicals which may pass uncontrolled and unwanted genetic changes to it’s progeny.
Wait! Stop for a moment. Before you tar and feather me, run me out of town.
Let me say this. I am not a Monsanto fan, nor am I a fan of GM/GMO foods of any kind. GM/GMO foods will at some point become common on supermarket display shelf’s. Already, most corn, rice and soy products consumed are GM grains that have been developed by Monsanto to be so called Roundup Ready crops to be tolerant to Monsanto’s glyphosate based herbicide (Roundup) in it’s many forms.
The only way consumers can stop or slow GM products arriving and being sold by your supermarket is when ‘All’ consumers refuse to buy or consume GM/GMO foods. This is much easier said than done. GM/GMO corn is already in almost every produce you buy from your supermarket. Meat products, livestock feeds are corn based, fresh corn, canned corn, corn meal, corn based cooking oils, corn based sweeteners, corn syrup and so on. It’s even in your gas tank.
