Fall Or Is It Spring Gardening Season? It’s All About Latitude!

Fall Harvest

As in all real estate transaction, location, location, location! If you live in the Northern Hemisphere it’s Fall gardening season. On the other hand those living in the Southern Hemisphere are just starting their Spring gardens.

Fall gardening is more about garden clean-up, removing spent plants, amending your garden soil, tilling in compost and humus. Planting cold weather crops and cover crops before winters first freezing cold blast. It will soon be time to prune your perennials, fruit and shade trees vineing plants and flowering shrubs and bushes.

Fall gardening is the time you plant your 2013 summer garlic crop. Buy and plant spring flowering bulb plants like Tulips and Daffodils. It’s the time for ornamental kale, mums and pansies.

Spring time in Australia


If you don’t have a compost pile or bin now is a good time to start your composting project. It’s really worth the effort. In return for a little time and effort you will get back a lot of compost to amend your garden soil and it will cost you next to nothing except the time you invest in putting plant litter on your compost pile.
Fall and Early Winter Projects

Fall is the time to can the last of your cucumber when making pickles, a time for making salsa, pasta sauces, red or green, sweet or hot relishes and fried green tomato’s. Fall is a time to can and freeze the last of your summer gardens goodness, before the first hard frost ends your summer garden. fall is the time to move tender potted plants indoors for the winter.

  1. I’ll be out there if this wildfire smoke ever clears out of the valley.

    • Re: Teresa Cleveland Wendel – I read that much of the U.S. is covered in smoke from the fires in the west and northwest. I hope you soon find the fires are out and the wind blows away the smoke filling your valley(s)
