Memorial Day is not really the first day of summer but many consider it to be the day summer starts. This weekend will be a 3 day holiday for many Americans. There will gallons of ice tea and beer consumed along with tons of fresh vegetables and plates of hot off the grill BBQ for everyone.
It’s sad to say but there are many that don’t have a clue why we celebrate Memorial Day. It is a United States federal holiday that honors soldiers and is observed on the last Monday of May (May 30 in 2011). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War. It was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.
Keeping in mind who and why we are celebrating this day, Lets Cook!
Not wanting to seem to be taking credit for others work, I am providing a link so you can get correct ingredients and preparation instructions from the cooks ‘inventors you might say’ for a few easy to cook and great tasting dishes you can go from grill to plate.
Elizabeth Karmel’s Original Beer Can Chicken Recipe This produces a very tasty moist grilled chicken.
Dinosaur Bar-B-Que’s Home Style Pulled Bar-B-Que Pork This recipe calls for hickory wood chips, but, being from the southwest USA I prefer the flavor of mesquite smoked BBQ over hickory. No matter what wood you use to smoke your pork it will surely be a crowd pleaser.

Barbecued Onions If you like onions you will love this recipe for BBQ onions.
BBQ beans This site has about 70 different BBQ Bean recipes, so you really have no excuse not to have BBQ Beans as a vegetable side dish at this Memorial Day BBQ.
Fresh Corn Grilled in or out of it’s husk Don’t get in a hurry, grill your corn off to one side, not directly over the coals.
A handy guide to grilling vegetables This is a good guide for grilling almost any vegetable that you may have picked from your garden or purchased at your local farmers market.
Why is common sense so uncommon?
