My favorite ‘also my only’ son-n-law dug me 5 Rose of Sharon’s that came up in his sisters flower bed last year. They will be planted today just on the north side of my Tiny home along the south end of my Tiny garden plot. That will place them about 3 feet outside of my soon to be yard fence.
They will be close enough to my window on my tiny world, to easily watch the hummingbirds and bumble bees feeding on these hardy, lovely, old fashion flowering garden shrubs. With our cold dry winters they will often freeze back to the ground, but, that’s OK with me. With a hard pruning to remove dead limbs they will still produce a mass of lovely flowers over a long bloom season.
Many consider sea cane and Texas paradise trees to be trash plants. However, at my age I want to plant trees and wind break cane that will make a shade for me and my dogs to enjoy in ‘my’ lifetime. I can have a a local tree service haul in and plant a 4-5 inch diameter live oak tree that’s about 15 feet tall and have an instance tree, but, at $800.00 to $1000.000 each they do not fit into my fixed income budget.I have one Pecan seedling from Barb’s that a squirrel planted last winter. It’s a native variety I’m sure which means it bears a tasty but smaller hard to crack nut. This also means that it is well adapted to our hot dry summers, cold dry winters and will not be up rooted by one of our famous South West wind storms. They are fairly fast growing making them a very nice shade tree. Any pecans that I may get are just a bonus. I can’t wait to get my hands on this tree and get it planted and watered in before the heat of summer arrives.
Why is common sense so uncommon?
